This engaging drill combines fitness with fielding skills. Mark a 22-yard area and divide players into two teams. Each team has a batsman padded up.
On the coach’s signal, the first batsman from each team sprints to the opposite marker, grounding their bat as if attempting a quick single. Once the batters crosses the line, the next player can run. The team that finishes first wins the round.
4. Chase and Throw Drill
This drill focuses on the ability to chase down balls and return them accurately to the wicketkeeper. Place three or four balls at a distance from the stumps.
The fielder starts facing the stumps. On the coach’s call, they turn, sprint to field the ball and return it to the wicketkeeper before jogging back. Repeat this process for all the balls, then switch roles with the wicketkeeper. Aim to complete three sets.
5. Shy Drill
The shy drill is excellent for practicing accurate throws at the stumps from various angles. The feeder rolls the ball into a designated area.
The fielder runs from behind the stumps to field the ball and has a go at hitting the stumps at the other end. Meanwhile, the batsman attempts to make their ground after running. Repeat this drill with different batsmen to enhance accuracy and speed.
6. Ladder Catch and Throw Drills
Using an agility ladder or mini hurdles, the fielder runs through the ladder, focusing on maintaining speed and proper running form.
At the end of the ladder, the fielder catches a ball thrown to them, returns it, and then runs back through the ladder in the opposite direction. Repeat this sequence five times and aim for three sets to build endurance and coordination.
