What is The Hundred?
The Hundred is a new cricket format featuring 100-ball matches, designed to be faster-paced and more exciting. Launched by the ECB in 2021, the format targets younger audiences who may have lost interest in the traditional versions of the game.
Why Introduce a New Format?
The ECB noticed a decline in cricket’s popularity among younger fans. To address this, they created The Hundred – a format that is shorter, easier to follow, and packed with action, aiming to rejuvenate interest in the sport.
Format of The Hundred Competition
While The Hundred shares similarities with T20 cricket, it introduces several unique rules to set it apart.
Innings and Duration
Each match features two teams, with each team batting and bowling for 100 balls. An inning lasts about 65 minutes, with a 15-minute break in between, making the total match duration approximately 2.5 hours. There is one 90-second strategic timeout available to each bowling team.
Overs and Bowling
In The Hundred, an over consists of 5 balls. A bowler can deliver up to 20 balls per inning (equivalent to 4 traditional overs). A bowler may choose to bowl five or ten balls in a row. After every 10 balls, the bowling end is changed.
Powerplay
Each team has a powerplay of 25 balls (first 5 overs), during which only 2 fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle, creating an opportunity for the batting team to score more aggressively.
