On This Day: When Saqlain Mushtaq Became  The Second Player To Take  Two Hat Tricks In ODI

Date:

On June 11, 1999, at The Oval, Pakistan’s legendary spinner Saqlain Mushtaq dazzled cricket fans with a hat-trick in the ICC World Cup Super Six fixture against Zimbabwe.

This remarkable feat made him the second player after Wasim Akram to secure two hat-tricks in the 50-overs format. His first hat-trick also came against Zimbabwe in 1996 at Peshawar.

In this crucial match, Pakistan, led by Wasim Akram, opted to bat first. Saeed Anwar top-scored with 103, while Wajahatullah Wasti and Shahid Afridi added 40 and 37 runs respectively, helping Pakistan post a solid total of 271. Heath Streak and Henry Olonga claimed two wickets each for Zimbabwe.

In reply, Zimbabwe struggled despite a fighting 54 from opener Neil Johnson. With the score at 123/7 in 40 overs, Saqlain Mushtaq’s moment of brilliance sealed their fate. He first dismissed Henry Olonga, who was stumped by Moin Khan. Next, Adam Huckle was beaten by the spin and stumped, and finally, Pommie Mbangwa was adjudged LBW, giving Saqlain his hat-trick. Pakistan won by a massive 148 runs, securing their spot in the semi-finals.

Saqlain’s performance was a testament to his skill and control. Known for inventing the doosra, he became a trendsetter in spin bowling. His international career, which began in 1995, saw him become the fastest to reach 100 ODI wickets.

He played 49 Tests, taking 208 wickets, and 169 ODIs, claiming 288 wickets. Despite a knee injury ending his career at 29, Saqlain’s legacy as a spinner and coach remains significant.

Pakistan eventually chased down 241 to beat New Zealand in the semi-finals but finished as runners-up after losing to Australia in the final. Saqlain’s hat-trick against Zimbabwe remains one of the most memorable moments of the 1999 World Cup, highlighting his skills and contribution to Pakistan cricket.
