Journey to Greatness

Making his international debut against New Zealand in 1984, Akram’s talent shone brightly as he claimed a five-wicket haul in both innings of his first Test match. However, injury concerns soon threatened to derail his promising trajectory. Undeterred, Akram embarked on a relentless pursuit of fitness, determined to overcome adversity and fulfill his potential on the cricketing stage.

Akram finally reaped his success when he became a crucial part of the Pakistan team that won the World Cup in Australia in 1992 under the leadership of Imran Khan. Known for his lethal swing bowling, Akram formed a destructive partnership with teammate Waqar Younis, making the cricket ball move in ways that left batsmen helpless.

Over his 19-year professional cricket career, Akram became the highest wicket-taker as a left-arm fast bowler in international cricket, with 916 wickets to his credit.

His achievement of taking 500 ODI wickets during the 2003 World Cup confirmed his status as a sporting icon.

He led Pakistan in 25 Tests and 109 ODIs, achieving victories and significant milestones, including a Test series win against England in 1996 and reaching the ODI World Cup final in 1999. Akram also scored 3,717 runs in ODIs and 2,898 runs in Test cricket, with a memorable unbeaten 257 against Zimbabwe.

Even after retiring from international cricket following the 2003 ICC World Cup, Akram continued to impact the game. Through various coaching roles and insightful cricket analysis, he remained a revered figure, admired for his abilities, strength, and dedication to the sport.

Today, cricket fans around the world celebrate the birthday of the legendary Wasim Akram, whose contributions to the game not only transformed the game but also left an indelible legacy that continues to inspire future generations of cricketers.
