Making a debut in international cricket is a dream for any player, but it doesn’t always go as planned. Some Indian batters have faced the unfortunate event of scoring a duck on their T20I debut.

MS Dhoni vs South Africa | Johannesburg, 2006
MS Dhoni was the first Indian batter to score a duck on his T20I debut. In India’s inaugural T20I match against South Africa, Dhoni came in to bat at No. 4 during a run chase of 127 runs. He was dismissed for a duck on his second delivery, edging a ball from Charles Langeveldt onto the stumps.
KL Rahul vs Zimbabwe | Harare, 2016
Nearly a decade later, KL Rahul also scored a duck on his T20I debut against Zimbabwe. In the first match of a three-T20I series, India was chasing 170 runs. Rahul was bowled out on the first ball of the innings by Donald Tiripano, registering a golden duck. India eventually lost the match by 2 runs.
Prithvi Shaw vs Sri Lanka | Colombo, 2021
Prithvi Shaw had a similar fate in his T20I debut against Sri Lanka. Opening the innings with captain Shikhar Dhawan, Shaw was dismissed on the first delivery by Dushmantha Chameera, nicking an outswinger to the keeper. He scored a golden duck.
Abhishek Sharma vs Zimbabwe | Harare, 2024
Abhishek Sharma became the latest Indian batter to score a duck on his T20I debut. Following a remarkable IPL season, expectations were high for Sharma in the first T20I against Zimbabwe.
However, he was dismissed for a 4-ball duck, top-edging a ball and handing out an easy catch. Despite this, Sharma made a stunning comeback in the next match, scoring a hundred off 46 balls.
