Top 5: Questions India Must Answer For ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Date:

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, Team India faces several crucial questions that must be answered to ensure their success in the tournament.

With the event scheduled in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, 2025, India’s preparations are well underway under the guidance of new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Let’s explore the five most pressing questions the Indian team must address before the tournament begins.

5. Hybrid model or no-show: India’s stance on playing in Pakistan

One of the most pressing concerns surrounding the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is India’s stance on playing in Pakistan.

The BCCI has maintained that the decision to travel to Pakistan is a government call, and the team has opted for the ‘hybrid model’ in recent tournaments, playing their matches in neutral venues. The PCB is insisting that the BCCI provide written proof of the Indian government’s denial of permission if the team refuses to travel to Pakistan, citing security concerns.

This issue needs to be resolved amicably between the two boards to ensure the smooth conduct of the tournament.

4. Pace attack: Settling on the right combination

India’s pace attack features the reliable duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, with Arshdeep Singh providing a left-arm option.

The team management will need to carefully evaluate the remaining pace options to complete the four-man pace attack. Factors such as pitch conditions, opposition strengths, and the balance of the team will play a crucial role in determining the final composition of the pace unit.

3. Hardik Pandya: The all-important all-rounder

Hardik Pandya’s fitness and form will be crucial for India’s success in the Champions Trophy. As the specialist batting all-rounder, Pandya’s inclusion will allow India to field three pacers and three spinners, providing a well-rounded attack.

However, Pandya will need to prove his mettle in domestic cricket and demonstrate his ODI prowess to cement his place in the team.

2. Shreyas Iyer’s role and the spin conundrum

With the Champions Trophy being held in Asia, India will likely opt for a spin-heavy attack. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav are the frontrunners, while Washington Sundar’s recent resurgence as a bowling all-rounder could make him a valuable addition to the squad.

Sundar’s ability to use the conditions effectively and provide batting depth makes him a strong contender for a spot in the playing XI.

1. KL Rahul vs Rishabh Pant: Who will don the gloves?

India has been backing KL Rahul as their preferred keeper-batter in ODIs since last year’s Asia Cup, leading into the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Rahul’s experience and consistent performances have given him the edge over Rishabh Pant, who is seen as the specialist keeper across all formats.

However, with Pant’s recent return from injury and his impressive showing in the T20 World Cup, the management will need to carefully evaluate the pros and cons of each player before making a final decision.
