1. Intention Nets

One effective way to improve your batting in the nets is by focusing on your intention for each ball. Before facing a delivery, set a specific goal for how you want to hit the ball, such as:

  • Scoring a single
  • Hitting a boundary
  • Defending the ball
  • Leaving the ball outside off stump

After each delivery, rate your shot on a scale of 0 to 4, with 0 being out and 4 being an excellent shot. This drill helps you develop a clear mindset and measure your progress over time.

2. Open the Batting

Imagine you’re opening the innings when batting in the nets. You aim to play like you would in the first few overs of a match:

  • Take a few balls to assess the pace and movement of the ball
  • Leave deliveries outside off stump
  • Play straighter balls into the on-side
  • Drive full balls and cut or pull short ones

Experiment with how far you can push your limits without getting out. This drill will help you develop a solid foundation for your innings.

3. Find the Gaps

In this drill, your goal is to score off every ball by placing the ball where the fielders are not. You can:

  • Play conventional shots when the ball allows
  • Defend to drop the ball for a single
  • Hit over the top when the field is up
  • Use shots like the sweep and reverse sweep
  • Play more unusual shots to find gaps in the field

Try different shots and see what works well for you. This drill will enhance your scoring options and ability to manipulate the field.

4. Decision-Making Drill – Pick the Length

Your ability to make quick decisions is crucial as a batsman. This drill helps sharpen your decision-making skills by forcing you to quickly determine the length of the delivery:

  • Set up two lines across the pitch with marker cones to separate full, good, and short lengths
  • Have a partner throw the ball from 3/4 pitch, mixing up the length
  • Call the length before the ball pitches
  • If you call correctly, you get a point; if not, you lose a point
  • If you don’t make a call, you lose two points

This drill trains your brain to make quicker decisions and improves your ability to judge the length of the ball.

5. Advanced T20 Drill – 12 Ball Challenge

This drill allows you to practice aggressive batting and hitting in different zones. Set up a bowling machine or have a partner bowl, and see how many boundaries you can hit in 12 balls. Change the line and length to practice hitting different deliveries.

Remember, the key to improving your batting in the nets is to experiment, set specific goals, and measure your progress. Incorporate these drills into your training routine and watch your batting skills soar.
