Cricket fans, prepare for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, set to take place in India and Sri Lanka! As we wrap up the thrilling 2024 edition, the focus now shifts to the qualification process for the next big event in T20 cricket.

Automatic Qualification: 12 Teams Secured Their Spots

Of the 20 teams competing in the 2026 T20 World Cup, 12 have already secured their spots through automatic qualification. Co-host India and seven other teams—Australia, Afghanistan, the USA, South Africa, the West Indies, England, and Bangladesh—earned their places by advancing to the Super 8 stage in the 2024 edition.

Although Sri Lanka did not make it to the Super 8, they automatically qualified as a host nation. The remaining three spots were filled based on ICC T20I rankings, with New Zealand, Pakistan, and Ireland cutting.

The Battle For The Remaining 8 Spots

Over 100 nations are vying for the remaining eight slots, with the ICC organizing a series of sub-regional and regional qualifiers across five regions: Africa, Americas, Asia, East Asia-Pacific, and Europe.

The first sub-regional qualifier was held in Italy from June 9-16, 2024, when the host nation advanced to the Europe Regional Qualifier Final. More such qualifiers will follow, leading to regional qualifier finals.

Teams that played in the 2024 World Cup but didn’t secure automatic qualification will enter directly into their respective regional qualifier finals. This includes Namibia and Uganda from Africa, Canada from the Americas, Nepal and Oman from Asia, Papua New Guinea from East Asia-Pacific, and Scotland and the Netherlands from Europe.

Regional Qualifier Finals: The Key To The World Cup

The regional qualifier finals will determine which teams make it to the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. From Africa, Asia, and Europe, two teams each will qualify, while one team each from the Americas and East Asia-Pacific regions will earn a spot, completing the 20-team lineup.
